Sharper Analysis With Sector Scores

When you hire a carpenter to install cabinets, does he bring just a drill and a box of screws? No, he brings a toolbox with plenty more options.

Investing works the same way. Our Quadrix stock-rating system assigns percentile ranks that compare nearly 5,000 U.S.-traded stocks to each other. Over time high scorers have tended to outperform low scorers. But that doesn't mean we end our stock-selection process with traditional Quadrix scores. We also use other types of analysis tools — including our sector-specific scores, which rank stocks relative to those in their sector rather than the broad market.

We calculate two sector scores:

12-Factor uses a dozen individual Quadrix statistics that work particularly well for a given sector.

Reranked Overall starts with the same six category scores that derive the traditional Overall score, but favors those most effective in a sector.

We don't use the sector scores on their own, but rather to verify the validity of the traditional Overall score. Find sector scores for more than 1,500 stocks at www.DowTheory.com/Go/Sectors, and for our recommended stocks.
